App Store crackdown moves on to 'cookie-cutter' apps | iPodNN

Apple attempts at blocking unwanted titles from the App Store have evolved to target so-called "cookie-cutter" apps, developers say. The affected apps -- in the crosshairs for approximately a month, according to claims -- are mostly built with special generator software, which can be used churn out apps based on standard templates. Apple's specific focus though is said to be titles that provide little functionality, such as a simple RSS feed.

While the cleanup could harm some companies specializing in app generators, Apple is said to be approaching a few developers and making recommendations that will allow them to stay in business. Appmakr for instance has begun integrating more complex options into its designs, including landscape and offline modes, as well as in-app purchases and instant notifications. Apple is also allegedly limiting its actions to preventing new cookie-cutter apps from appearing, instead of removing existing ones.

Despite complaints about the restrictions of the App Store, Apple has in recent weeks been outright removing thousands of titles it considers inappropriate. Most of these have been "overtly sexual" apps, featuring some form of sexual innuendo and/or scantily-clad women. A minority have been Wi-Fi hotspot detectors, accused of using rule-breaking private frameworks.

I like what Apple is doing. If you are going to spend money on an application, you want it to have some quality. Yes, I understand we're talking 99 cents.

Apple is a consumer experience driven company. Most geeks and mid to advanced users will be able to figure it out but for others, the user experience is what makes Apple so much better than other companies. Apple mission is about the user experience and that is why their products feel different. It is why their products don't feel like they have been designed by engineers. Keep up the good work Apple.

‘Mission Impossible’ Crew Pinches $26,000 in Apple Notebooks | Epicenter | Wired.com

An undetermined number of crafty burglars defeated motion sensors, a variety of alarms and security cameras to make off with $26,000 worth of Apple notebooks from a New Jersey Best Buy Wednesday, local media is reporting.

The thieves lowered themselves from a hole they cut in the ceiling at the South Brunswick Best Buy just where in-store advertising banners would conceal their movements. They pinched the computers without ever touching the floor — which would have also set off the alarm.

They snapped up 20 Apple notebooks and got out like they got in — by shimmying a 3-inch pipe that ran outside the building.

It wasn’t until some employees showed up at 6:30 a.m. that anyone got wise.

“High level of sophistication,” police spokesman James Ryan told the Newark Star-Ledger.

“I would say they were a professional crew,” the newspaper quoted security expert John Harris.

But one commenter on the nj.com story sees this as an obvious inside job.

“What nonsense!” said sdgj. “Definitely an inside job — probably three kids who work in the store - at least one in security. They knew exactly where to cut the roof and where to descend down to get exactly what they wanted. I’d bet they put the banners up so that the cameras would be obscured. Just find out who decided to put up the banners and you have the break needed.”

We don’t know if this heist took a mere 31 seconds, but it does rival an equally brazen (and efficient) Apple Store robbery in nearby Marlton, New Jersey, late last year, which netted those thieves 23 Macbook Pros, 14 iPhones and nine iPod Touches.

Police said they think that the crew which hit Best Buy had to include at least 2 or 3 people — and might have struck before.

Hmmmm …. maybe an hour’s drive south on I-295 at a certain Apple store last September 9?

If we could harness this ingenuity for good, imagine what a wonderful world we could live in. They should be able to track those machines. Shouldn't they have a list of serial numbers that they can trace? Note to self... don't buy any Apple computers off of eBay.

Feel good tip of the day: Count your blessings and not your problems

I saw that quote on a church sign near my house. I though it was a great paradigm shift. How often do we go through life saying how miserable we are? I think it's time, starting today, to go through life saying how good things are. What a fantastic way to go through life! The next time someone asks you how your are doing instead of giving them a litany of problems and complaints give them a positive thought. Who knows, it could get contagious.

What an inspiration the Olympics have been so far!

I don't usually sit and watch the Olympics. This year, to spend more time with my wife, I have watched. I am so glad I have and I am hooked. NBC has kept the tear jerker pieces to a minimum, but with that aside, the competition has been thrilling. I still think that there would be no better feeling than standing on the podium at the Olympics listening to your country's national anthem.

For me, I'll never be an Olympic athlete, but the dedication and sacrifice that each has made inspires me to do the same thing in life. How often do we just go through the motions? How often do we give less than our best? I know that a gold medal for parenting or husbaning or coding will never exist but that doesn't mean you can't give everything you do your best. 

Today the Gospel at Mass (Lk 6:17-26) was about not doing something for the attention but to do it because it is in your heart. It made me think of how I go about my life and  achieving my goals. Sometimes I get so caught up in other's opinion of what I am doing that I forget to do it for myself first. To hang your achievements out there on your sleeve for everyone to see has no long term benefits. Once the accolades end, what do you have? What becomes your motivation? The only true motivator is for yourself.

Getting back to the athletes, I can bet that most get the motivation for their dedication and sacrifice from within. To win for your country, is just a side bonus for the hours upon hours of training that makes an Olympic athlete. I believe that if we take our cues from these athletes and stride for our best in what we do for ourselves and no one else, we can be better than we could ever imagine.

Stress Free Tip of the Day...

If you are in the Northeast, this Wednesday is supposed to bring more debilitating snow. Here's a tip, reschedule all your Wednesday meetings, appointment and such now. This way if it does snow, you won't have to worry about them and if it doesn't snow, you have a free day to catch up.

What do you do to get motivated when you have no motivation?

Today, I have no motivation to do anything that's on my desk. I have
been dancing around the office for the last 45 minutes. The only thing
that I've found that works is to get the music going and go in head
deep. I try to eliminate all the distractions I can because when I'm
like this, I very easily get distracted. (this post is a case in
point) So I wonder if anyone has a good idea to get motivated when you
just don't want to do anything.

Are we addicted to our devices or the information that we receive on the devices.?

My wife and I get into this discussion all the time as I sit on my chair and stare at my iPhone. She's convinced that I am reading email. She's partially right. I do scan my email but that is about 1/10 of what I use my iPhone for. I will typically read news, interesting articles and sometimes, if I need a good laugh, celebrity news. I guess my question is, what is the difference how we consume our information. If I read a book on the iPhone do I not get the same pleasure out of it as I do if I bought a physical book?  If I spend an hour with the newspaper am I more informed than if I use my iPhone? I think not.  

With Apple now releasing the iPad, our media consumption habits are going to change as other companies will copy the portable media consumption device. We are going to be more informed than ever before and our information consumption is going to be coming from different directions and different devices. Which brings me to my point, are we addicted to our devices or the information that we receive on the devices? or, is it because of the devices we are addicted to the information? I like being informed. I enjoy the different perspectives that the different sites bring and I also enjoy being engaged with that information in a comfy chair in my living room. So I'll end with the same answer I give my wife, "what's the difference if I read a newspaper or read the newspaper's website? Isn't the same news?"

Feel Good Tip of the Day: Giggle with a Child

Nothing makes me feel better than giggling with my son. We joke around all the time. Sometimes we get downright goofy. To hear a hearty laugh from a child just melts away all the stress and all the built-up anger of the day. It's just wonderful. 

Instead of taking out your frustrations on your child, laugh with them. You'll both live longer and better for it.

Feel Good Tip of the Day: Sing Your Favorite Song at the Top of Your Lungs

I had a crappy commute this morning in the pouring, wind-swept rain but I managed to make it fun by singing some of my favorite songs without reserve from the driver's seat of my car. I have a few playlists that only have THE songs on it. You know those songs. Everybody has at least one. The one where you stay in the car or drive around the block until it's finished. I used that playlist to make a dreadful drive into something fun. Song after song of musical goodness. I got to work not stressed but rejuvenated. It made my day and made a Monday feel like a Friday. I suggest trying it the next time you feel down.

Make one change today

If you're like me, there are about 100 things you could change. Today, I challenge you to make one change in your life. It can be a big change or a small change, but make a change and make it stick. When this change becomes habit, make another change and then repeat. Eventually that list of 100 slowly, but surely, drops to 90 and so on. There's no rush, you'll be around for a long time.
Today, make one change. You'll feel better about yourself and achieve a sense of accomplishment. Good for you!
